Uganda

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda’s most visited savannah reserve, offering the richest variety of wildlife among the country’s national parks. With diverse habitats that include grasslands, forests, wetlands, and lakes, the park provides a haven for large mammals and primates. While rhinos are absent, it is home to four of the Big Five, and visitors can enjoy chimpanzee trekking as an added attraction.

Overview

The park is particularly known for its lion population, especially on the grassy Kasenyi Plains, but it also boasts the unique spectacle of tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector. Buffalo and elephant herds roam the savannah, while the Kazinga Channel is home to an impressive number of hippos. Daily boat trips along the channel provide opportunities to view these animals up close, enhancing the park’s allure.

The Park is set against the stunning backdrop of the Rwenzori Mountains, with additional scenic highlights such as the Kazinga Channel, which connects Lake Edward and Lake George, and over 10 crater lakes. The park’s accessible open savannah areas offer excellent game-viewing opportunities, while the forested regions, including the Kyambura Gorge and Maramagambo Forest, add a sense of adventure for those seeking to explore Uganda’s natural beauty beyond the plains.

Where to Stay

Ishasha Wilderness Camp

Ishasha Wilderness Camp is located in the Southern Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, along the Ntungwe River. This exclusive, remote camp offers a unique wilderness experience, combining exceptional service with the beauty of the surrounding savannah. The area is renowned for its tree-climbing lions, and wildlife freely roams the camp, including elephants bathing in the river, buffalo grazing, and monkeys like the Black-and-White Colobus and vervet frequently spotted. It’s the perfect retreat for nature lovers seeking tranquility and adventure.

Elephant Plains Lodge

Elephant Plains Lodge, perched on the western escarpment of the Albertine Rift, offers a luxurious retreat in Queen Elizabeth National Park with stunning views of Lake George and open grasslands. The lodge features six cottages and two family cottages, each with spacious rooms, comfy beds, and large ensuite bathrooms. Guests can enjoy dining on the terrace, sipping drinks at the bar, or relaxing by the pool. Situated on 80 acres of wilderness, it’s an ideal base for exploring Kasenyi Plains and wildlife photography.

What to do

Queen Elizabeth National Park offers a range of exciting activities for nature lovers and adventure seekers. You can embark on thrilling game drives across the park’s diverse landscapes, spotting the Big Four (excluding rhinos) and other wildlife like elephants, buffalo, and lions. A boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel offers close-up views of hippos, crocodiles, and numerous bird species. For primate enthusiasts, chimpanzee tracking in the Kyambura Gorge is a must. You can also explore the park’s crater lakes, hike the Rwenzori Mountains, or enjoy birdwatching and cultural tours.
