Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park, is considered one of the world’s top destinations to observe endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. It was here that primatologist Dian Fossey began her pioneering work, helping to habituate these gentle giants to human presence. In addition to gorilla trekking, the park offers other exciting activities, such as golden monkey trekking, a hike to Fossey’s former camp, and challenging climbs up the volcanic peaks for breathtaking views.

Overview

Beyond mountain gorillas, visitors can track habituated troops of golden monkeys, unique to the Albertine Rift, with some groups numbering over 100 individuals. The forest is also home to skittish buffalo and elephants, although sightings are rare. Other smaller animals, including bushbuck, bushpig, giant forest hogs, black-fronted duiker, and side-striped jackals, add to the diversity of wildlife within the park’s ecosystem.

Volcanoes National Park protects the Rwandan section of the Virunga Mountains, a chain of dormant and active volcanoes that span the borders of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park’s dramatic landscapes are marked by freestanding mountains connected by forested saddles, where the gorillas are often found in large groves of bamboo. This breathtaking setting not only provides sanctuary for these remarkable animals but also offers visitors a stunning, immersive experience in one of Africa’s most iconic and biodiverse landscapes.
